If databases, distributed systems or cloud infrastructure are the kind of problems you want to work on, Amazon has a Fall 2026 internship worth checking.
AWS is hiring Software Development Engineer interns for its Data Services organization, the group behind database, storage and analytics technologies used at large scale.
The internship begins in August or September 2026 and runs for 12 weeks. It is open to students pursuing Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Data Science, Information Systems or a related STEM degree, with expected graduation dates between January 2027 and December 2029.
For the Seattle location, Amazon lists an annualized starting pay range of $110,500 to $160,000.

What Makes This Internship Different?
Amazon already has broader Software Development Engineer internships, but this opening is specifically for AWS Data Services.
That distinction matters.
AWS Data Services works on database, storage and analytics services. The engineering problems can involve areas such as distributed systems, query processing, storage engines and large-scale data platforms.
Interns aren’t limited to watching how those systems are built. Amazon says SDE interns can work on scalable solutions using cloud-native architectures and microservices, participate in code reviews, contribute to technical documentation and help maintain distributed systems.
The job description also mentions GenAI and AI-powered development tools, along with monitoring, troubleshooting and production operations.
Interns are paired with a manager and mentor and work on a project during the program, so the role is aimed at giving students hands-on engineering experience rather than classroom-style training.
Who Can Apply?
You don’t need to be a database specialist to meet the basic qualifications.
Applicants must be at least 18 and enrolled in a bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Data Science, Information Systems or a related STEM field.
Your expected graduation date needs to fall between:
January 2027 and December 2029.
Amazon also expects experience with at least one general-purpose programming language. Examples listed in the posting include Java, Python, C++, C#, Go, Rust and TypeScript.
You should also have some familiarity with data structures, basic algorithm development or object-oriented design.
Previous technical internships are not listed as a basic requirement. They appear under preferred qualifications, along with experience in AWS or other cloud platforms, SQL and NoSQL databases, open-source projects, version control, debugging and AI development tools.
That makes this worth looking at even if your experience mainly comes from coursework or personal projects rather than a previous internship.
There Are Two Details Students Should Check
First, this is a full-time, in-office internship.
Amazon expects interns to work up to 40 hours per week, typically Monday through Friday, without classes or another job conflicting with the workday.
Students also need to have at least one quarter, semester or trimester remaining after the internship finishes.
Location preferences can be provided during the application process, but placement depends on business availability and isn’t guaranteed.
For Seattle, the posting lists starting pay of $110,500 to $160,000 annually. Because this is a 12-week internship, that number is an annualized pay range — it does not mean an intern receives up to $160,000 for 12 weeks. Final starting pay can vary based on location, experience and qualifications.
For students interested in backend engineering, cloud infrastructure or large-scale data systems, the specialization is probably the biggest reason to consider this opening. You’re applying specifically to AWS Data Services rather than a general Amazon internship pool.
If your graduation date falls within the required window, check the full requirements before applying.
