You don’t need aerospace experience to work on infrastructure that supports rockets, spacecraft and some of the world’s most advanced space facilities.
The SpaceX Spring 2027 Civil Engineering Internship is open to bachelor’s and graduate students interested in civil and structural engineering. Interns can work with engineering teams across SpaceX locations including Hawthorne, Cape Canaveral and Starbase.
The internship runs for at least 12 consecutive weeks, beginning in January or March 2027. Pay ranges from $28 to $30 per hour, depending on academic level.
And SpaceX makes one point particularly clear: previous aerospace experience isn’t required.

You’re Not Just Designing Ordinary Buildings
Civil and structural engineers at SpaceX work on the facilities and infrastructure needed to support the company’s engineering and space operations.
Interns join multidisciplinary engineering teams and help design, build, activate and maintain those facilities.
Depending on placement, that could mean being around programs connected to Falcon launch vehicles, Dragon spacecraft, Starship or SpaceX’s satellite operations.
For a civil engineering student, that’s what makes this internship unusual. The underlying engineering skills may be familiar, but the environment in which they’re being applied certainly isn’t.
SpaceX also says interns can attend presentations from company leaders, networking events and professional and personal development training during the program.
Who Can Apply?
The SpaceX Spring 2027 Civil Engineering Internship requires applicants to be enrolled in a bachelor’s degree or graduate program.
There’s one experience requirement worth noticing: candidates need at least three months of civil or structural engineering-related experience.
SpaceX prefers candidates with a GPA of 3.5 or higher and six or more months of internship or project experience in civil, structural or construction engineering, but those appear under preferred rather than basic qualifications.
Knowledge of engineering standards such as AISC, ACI 318, ASCE 7 and the International Building Code can help.
SpaceX also lists experience with tools such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, SAP2000 and Revit among its preferred skills.
Applicants must be able to work full-time and onsite for at least 12 consecutive weeks. Students placed at Cape Canaveral also need to provide their own transportation.
How Much Does SpaceX Pay Interns?
Pay depends on academic level.
Freshman/Sophomore engineering interns: $28/hour
Junior/Senior engineering interns: $30/hour
SpaceX says eligible interns may also receive a stipend to help with relocation costs.
Other listed benefits include medical coverage, access to a 401(k) retirement plan and paid company holidays.
At 40 hours per week, $30/hour would work out to about $1,200 per week before taxes, although the listing itself doesn’t specify a guaranteed 40-hour weekly schedule, so I wouldn’t use that calculation as a headline claim.
One Eligibility Rule You Should Check First
Before spending time on the application, check the US export-control requirements carefully.
For this internship, SpaceX states that applicants must fall within specified US-person categories such as a US citizen or national, lawful permanent resident, refugee or asylee. The listing also describes ITAR-related authorization requirements.
This is an important restriction, particularly for international students who might otherwise meet the academic requirements.
If you meet those requirements and already have some civil or structural engineering experience, this is a rare chance to apply those skills inside a company building infrastructure for launch vehicles, spacecraft and satellite programs.
The SpaceX Spring 2027 Civil Engineering Internship begins in January or March, so eligible students can check the full posting and application requirements through SpaceX Careers.
