What Would You Actually Work On?
This isn’t military enlistment. The program is part of Air Force Civilian Service, with participants working alongside IT Specialists, Computer Scientists and Computer Engineers.
Cyber and IT teams support systems used across the Department of the Air Force and Space Force. The work can cover systems engineering, cybersecurity, networks, infrastructure and operations support.
AFCS also highlights newer technology areas including artificial intelligence, machine learning, AR/VR and advanced computer systems.
The PAQ program combines that work with formal training in areas such as Cyber Technology, Cybersecurity, Networking, Infrastructure and Program Management.
There’s also a leadership-development component and mentoring from senior leadership.
Who Is Eligible?
The Air Force Cyber & IT Recent Graduate Program has several requirements that applicants should check before spending time on an application.
You must be a US citizen and have a bachelor’s or master’s degree in IT or a related field.
Applicants generally need to have graduated within the previous two years. Veterans may qualify within six years of completing their degree.
A GPA of at least 2.95 is required.
Candidates must also be able to obtain the necessary security clearance. AFCS notes that the Department of the Air Force funds this process, which can include a background check.
The available career paths include:
Computer Engineer, Computer Scientist, Electronic Engineer and Information Technology Specialist.
The Permanent Job Path Is the Part That Stands Out
A lot of graduate programs end with another job search.
The PAQ structure is different.
Participants enter a formal two-to-three-year development track, work on real projects and receive mentoring and training along the way. The program also provides for annual performance-based promotions and salary increases, subject to performance and supervisory approval.
After successful completion of the formal training plan, AFCS says the program offers placement into a permanent Air Force Civilian Service position.
For a recent graduate, that’s probably the most important part of this opportunity.
There are additional benefits as well. AFCS lists a Student Loan Repayment Program, graduate-degree tuition assistance, recruitment bonuses for selected positions and a paid move to the employment location when required upon conversion to the PAQ program.
